Transforming Landfills into Renewable Energy Sources
In July 2026, the city celebrated the completion of a 1,900-panel solar array installed on a capped landfill. This project is expected to generate approximately 1.4 million kilowatt-hours of electricity annually, sufficient to power around 200 homes. Additionally, the land lease to Greenskies Clean Energy provides the city with $72,000 in annual revenue.
Advancing Composting and Food Waste Reduction
New Haven’s Office of Climate and Sustainability has launched a two-year pilot program focused on minimizing food waste. This initiative includes supporting Haven’s Harvest, implementing Bigbelly smart compost drop-off receptacles, and offering technical assistance to businesses and schools. The Long Wharf Responsible Growth Plan is a comprehensive effort to transform New Haven’s waterfront district into a vibrant, mixed-use neighborhood while addressing long-term climate resilience and community access. Key elements of the plan include expanding and upgrading Long Wharf Park, adaptive reuse of large parcels, encouraging mixed-use development via a new zoning district, and investing in major coastal infrastructure and flood protection.
Developing Sustainable Transportation Infrastructure
New Haven is updating and expanding its development strategy for the Mill River District, an industrial corridor that links Fair Haven, Wooster Square, and East Rock. The city is combining and reimagining existing municipal development plans into a unified vision that preserves the neighborhood’s industrial base while creating new opportunities for housing, recreation, and equitable growth. The vision includes increased housing, expanded public space, and dedicated waterfront infrastructure.
